C S Art Colorado Commission:
American Dream Series
The United States Federal Government issues WIC checks to income-qualified pregnant or nursing women and young children. WIC checks allow one to purchase food. One must shop at a specific grocery store to purchase government approved foods denoted on each check.
My American Dream series grew out of my experience while participating in the WIC program: the difficulty in adhering to the highly regimented food list, the judgmental social interactions, and my own conflicting perceptions. I was caught in the strong undercurrents of social perception and personal necessiity. An undercurrent that assumes poverty is a choice. (As if anyone wakes up in the morning, and then opts to be unable to feed their children.)
A day at the pool is a privileged leisure activity and if you are poor then your right to choose those activities are no longer your own. A day at the pool is now something provided to those less fortunate. So they can experience, at least once, what it is like to be human.
